Craniosacral Therapy

Home > Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy is a technique whereby the therapist works with a patient’s craniosacral system; brain, spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid, meninges and the bones of the skull. The belief in Craniosacral Therapy is that the life force is transported in the cerebrospinal fluid throughout the craniosacral system and to all the tissues in the body. A Craniosacral Therapist then, will treat the patient holistically, by observing the rhythms and pulsations of the system and then facilitate the body’s own healing through adjustment and massage of the various components of the craniosacral system.

There are three separate approaches to Craniosacral Therapy. Sutural therapy manipulates the sutures or plates of the skull to ease pressure on the cranial bones. Meningeal therapy treats the membranes (meninges) at the base of the skull using a massage and pressure technique. Reflex therapy focuses on overstimulation of the nerve endings in the scalp or between the cranial sutures. A technique that attempts to combine all of these approaches is called Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT).
