Rolfing in Rhode Island

Home > Rolfing > Rhode Island

Rolfing is a form of Structural Integration bodywork that restores balance within the body by removing strain patterns within the myofascial system. Rolfing works by re-educating the body and raising awareness about how to be in harmony with gravity. A Rolfer is interested in the supportive connections throughout the body and will work with a client from a body-as-a-system point of view. Rolfing is typically a series of 10 sessions, during which time the practitioner will evaluate and identify areas of fascial tightness and will work to release them.

Rolfing was developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf during the 1930s, when she had become dissatisfied with standard medical treatments. After studying as a biochemist and physicist, she found homeopathic medicine and began treating disabled people using her newly discovered techniques of Structural Integration. She found much success and began training others in her therapy during the 1960s and 70s.
