Swedish Massage

Home > Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage is a type of sports massage, designed to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Swedish Massage involves kneading and stroking the muscles in the same direction as blood flows to the heart, using deeper muscles and bone as points of pressure. The types of massage strokes that are typically used are Effleurage, Petrissage, friction and percussion, followed by passive and active movements of the muscles.

Henry Peter Ling developed the Swedish Massage technique in Sweden around the turn of the twentieth century. This type of muscle relief therapy is used to treat stiffness, numbness and pain, and to flush the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic waste products.
